There is no debating the importance of physical activity, especially for children. As a parent, it is your responsibility to teach your kids that regular exercise is essential for good overall health. Unfortunately, the cold weather often keeps us sedentary for months at a time, but it doesn’t have to. Here are five things you can do to keep your children active this winter:
Partake in winter activities.
Don’t let the cold weather keep you inside. There are still plenty of activities you can enjoy during the winter months, such as skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, sledding, snowball fights, or building a snowman. Just make sure to dress warm!
Play video games.
Video games aren’t what they used to be. Thanks to recent advances in technology, you can now get in a serious workout with your Nintendo Wii or Xbox Kinect. There’s games everyone can enjoy, including basketball, soccer, tennis, dancing, and more.
Get moving indoors.
Even if you don’t have a video game system, there are other ways you can be active indoors. Exercise DVDs are a great way to work out in the comfort of your own home. More “fun” forms of physical activity that you can do inside include dancing or making an indoor obstacle course.
Go to the local community center.
Winter is the perfect time to take advantage of your local community center, recreation center, or YMCA. Many of these places host organized indoor activities that will get your kids out of the house and moving around.
Enroll them in a youth sports league.
If you live in Fairfield County, Connecticut, enroll your kid in a youth sports league at Insports Centers. As southern Connecticut’s largest indoor sports facility, we host year-round leagues, camps, clinics, and tournaments for every sport you can imagine.
There is no offseason at Insports! With a full-sized turf field and multiple hardwood courts, we can accommodate any sport all year long. See a list of our upcoming youth sports leagues online, or give us a call at (203) 268-1214.
